Heavenology
I’ve finally starting reading N.T. Wright’s book, Surprised by Hope. The amazing thing about the book is its ability to totally dismantle the way people think about eschatology, life as it is, and the primary mission of churches.
My curious thought is that this seems to contain doctrines capable of causing church splits amongst traditional fundamentalists and emerging evangelicals (a term I’m borrowing from Mark Driscoll, but with reservations). The truth is, many people have a lot invested in a false doctrine that the hope of Christianity is to spend all of eternity in Heaven.
Perhaps Machiavelli put it best:
“And it ought to be remembered that there is nothing more difficult to take in hand, more perilous to conduct, or more uncertain in its success, than to take the lead in the introduction of a new order to things.
Because the inventor has for enemies all those who have done well under the old conditions, and lukewarm defenders in those who may do well under the new…thus it happens that whenever those who are hostile have the opportunity to attack they do it as partisans, whilst the others defend lukewarmly…..”
