Facing Illiteracy Revisited
July 25, 2008A previous entry simply entitled Facing Illiteracy took a look at the phenomon of Millennials no longer being interseted in reading books, and thus, the Bible. I’m encountering more evidence of this recently and really struggling with it more because this monster has to be addressed.
I oversee a developmental ministry at my church that is designed to help teenagers to grow in Christianity. One of the problems that has become evident is that even amongst the most respected, intentional Christians, reading the Bible has become a thing of rarity. Most feel guilty for their lack to doing so, but they remain either uninterested or intimidated by Scripture.
Publishing companies have produced a meriad of “gimmick Bibles” with unique covers, “teen study Bibles,” and other offerings. The trouble is, students tend to get these with really good intentions, but no matter if the Bible comes packaged with firecrackers in the same box. Inevitably, like the firecrackers, the interest wears off very rapidly.
One organization that may have an interesting inroad is XXXChurch, the controversial ministry dedicated to addressing the rampant pornography problem. My Causes feed on Facebook this morning from them read:
We have handed out thousands of Bibles over the last few years at porn shows.
The question we always get is “Where are the pictures?’
Up until now, there have been no pictures. Jake just wrapped up design on a new Bible with pictures. We are calling it the stories edition and will include helps, stories, testimonies, key verses and some study aids.
Coming in a short while to a porn show near you…and the X3 store.
